Court Worker/Video Court Coordinator 

The Wabaseemoong Independent Nations Mino Kwaykaatiziwin Justice Services (MKJS) program invites applicants residing on the Wabaseemoong Independent Nations to apply for this full time Court Worker/Video Court Coordinator (CWVCC) position. The CWVCC will provide support to all Wabaseemoong Independent Nation community members who are before the courts in Kenora, Ontario and on the Wabaseemoong Independent Nations. The CWVCC will assist WIN clients as required from time to time including liaison with the courts, crown attorney’s office, police, legal aid, duty counsel and other needed resources on their behalf. The MKCD will also provide transportation to WIN clients attending court in Kenora as required.

Summary: The Mino Kwaykaatiziwin Justice Services Court Worker Video Court Coordinator will report directly to the MKJS By-Law Justice Manager and be based on the WIN community. The Mino Kwaykaatiziwin Court Worker/Driver will provide interpretative, navigational, video court and transportation services to all WIN resident clients who are before the courts. Training will be provided by an experienced court worker.

 Responsibilities and duties will include:

  • Assisting in court support services that are culturally sensitive and holistic, with support services and referrals in place within and outside the WIN communities
  • Providing clients and families with the tools, knowledge, and guidance for self-empowerment during their journey of healing
  • Work closely with clients and communities, building strong, trusting relationships
  • Coordinate Zoom Video Court appearances for court clients and transport to trials in Kenora, Ontario.
  • Coordinate/facilitate restorative justice programs including referrals for diversions and justice circles.
  • Assist court clients for bail including developing bail plans and finding accommodations for them.
  • Keep accurate data including names and amounts of clients served and providing info to supervisor or Chief & council when required.
  • Ensuring all expense and travel claims are provided to AJSN for signing and process

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Grade 10 equivalent and combined experience, post-secondary education preferred
  • Experience in providing support to vulnerable clients. Ensuring their safety is always the man priority.
  • Knowledge of Anishinaabe culture, traditions and protocols
  • Ability to speak Anishinaabemowin (Wabaseemoong dialect) an asset.
  • Knowledge of historic and current forms of colonial oppression, systemic discrimination and barriers facing Anishinaabe communities and its members.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills and ability to write reports, workplans and prepare budgets if necessary.
  • Ability to keep accurate records of all activities and maintain own files.  *Provide accurate quarterly statistical reports
  • Ability to travel – must have full Driver license, own their own registered vehicle w/ comprehensive auto insurance.
